Zhanqiao Pier, built in 1892, with its Chinese-style “Huilan Pavilion” at the tip, has become a classic landmark of Qingdao. After Germany leased Qingdao, they constructed numerous German-style buildings with red roofs and yellow walls, giving the city its distinctive “red rooftops, green trees, blue seas, and clear skies” landscape.

The Governor’s Residence, built during Germany’s colonial rule from 1897 to 1914, is a representative building combining the German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and German castle styles.The Qingdao German Prison Site Museum also houses over 50,000 pages of documents and more than 2,000 photographs from the German occupation period.

In winter, the Eight Great Passes is quieter, with a sense of tranquility. The red-roofed villas appear even more ancient and elegant under the warm winter sun.

In winter, flocks of seagulls soar above Zhanqiao Pier, their graceful flight reflecting on the shimmering sea, adding vitality and poetry to this century-old landmark.
